Before you do anything else with your profile
Look on the top line for the phrase:
-
Privacy settings
 -
Click that tab and set your privacy levels to determine who can see your profile.  Mine is set to let everybody see it.  However you set the privacy levels, I suggest you fill out your profile as if it will be available on the web.
-
Your main profile
When your privacy settings suit you, go to the Edit Profile window and fill out what you want people to see.  You will probably want to know how to get a picture of your avatar.  Here is how:
Display name:  Careful here:
  • You will be stuck with this name for a week.
  • Your friends may not recognize you under the new name.
  • Your friends may not find you in their friends list.
  • People using search may use the wrong name.
Save.  Don't forget to save.
Also save before you put in your picture if you have made other entries

Your interests
Just start your entry.  Predictive suggestions will let you select among similar items already in use.  The Recommendations tab will show you a few people whose interests match yours.  You may want to Follow* or Friend some of these people.

Groups.  Your list of groups is automatically updated when you join a group and check "Show in my profile."  If you don't check this box, the group should not show in your profile.  You can go back to the group profile and change this setting at any time.

Profiles of other people
You have already figured out the next step: check the profiles of other people.  Check when
  • you meet people (hover the cursor on the avatar, click the green info button)
  • see people around you. (People button, nearby people)
  • see people at an event you like.  (People button, nearby people)
You can also see profiles in various other contexts. Hover the cursor near the avatar or the avatar name. For people not near you, type the name in search:

Caution: the self-descriptions you see in the profile may not be true.  But what the person writes will tell you something about the person.
-
How to use profiles
Picks. People put notes, pictures, and landmarks here about places they want to recommend.   If the person seems interesting, you may want to ask them about some of their picks.  Use the Picks button* to add picks and edit them.

Groups:  If this person seems to have interests like yours, maybe you will want to join some of the groups the person is in. Click on a group name to see the group profile.   If the group offers open enrollment, you will see a join button.

*Teleport:  CAUTION: Many people consider such an offer offensive unless they have agreed first.  Some people will drop you from their contacts list or block you if you make a teleport offer without their permission.
