2017 GAME: EDU: Digital citizenship: "Be Internet Awesome " Awesome needs public demonstration

Digital citizenship:  "Be Internet Awesome "
Awesome needs public demonstration
A good start, but keeping safe just makes you safe.   You are not awesome till the people around you can see you use your superpowers.

"Be Internet Awesome, a program developed in concert with the Family Online Safety Institute, the Internet Keep Safe Coalition and ConnectSafely, educates kids about digital citizenship in interactive ways, including an online game."

  • Bullets bounce off Superman
  • But that is only awesome if you see somebody shoot at him.
  • If nobody shoots at him, he is only the mild-mannered Clark Kent.

    Genre Short Poetry Workshop-Tue, 8/1, 7pm SLT

This week Arabella Nemeth is guest host for the Short Poetry Workshop. In Genre Poetry, we craft poems to match concepts and imagery with the vocabulary used to express them. The intent is to write in the style of the genre, not so much to make the genre a topic. So join us to learn, write and share your poems. East Cookie, Cookie (185, 121, 23)

Think about what the learner wants

    Learning objectives for the game

    • Be Internet Smart and think before sharing
    • Be Internet Alert and don’t fall for fake news
    • Be Internet Strong and keep personal information private
    • Be Internet Kind and stay nice online
    • Be Internet Brave and speak if you see something bad

Which of these is awesome power to a child, tween, or teen?

    • None of the above, I suspect.
    • Those all look like propaganda of the parents.
    • Real power: you get a good enough score, you get something good.
    • Maybe access for you and 3 of your friends to a popular web-based game.
    • A one-hour free trial for a game that otherwise costs.
    • Some game company might support that as promotion.
    • Less power, but more satisfaction to educators: research skills.
    • Skills for web-based research go way beyond Google search.
    • Digital citizenship instruction should have a digital module to teach that.
    • Other low-power rewards might be of value if they had local support.
    • A certificate might earn credit in a class.
